DEPARTMENTS

From our alumni Association

Alumni Association President Shante Hastings

November 2008

As you read this letter, we’re already halfway through the fall season, but I do not want to miss the opportunity to welcome the University’s new director of alumni relations, Cindy Campanella, a 1984 graduate in consumer economics. I also want to congratulate this year’s Outstanding Alumni Award recipients and the T. Muncy Keith Spirit Award recipient. These awards were presented during halftime of the Homecoming football game.

Since a good amount of the UD Alumni Association’s decision-making and work is done at the committee level, I thought it would be a good idea to provide you with a brief overview of our seven committees and their responsibilities. Each director on our board is a member of at least one committee, and members-at-large also are invited to participate on committees.

The Awards Committee establishes criteria and selects the recipients of the Outstanding Alumni Award and inductees to the Alumni Wall of Fame, which are both presented annually.

The Executive Committee is composed of the elected officers and standing chairs of all committees and is charged with leadership and direction oversight of the Association.

The Finance Committee recommends the annual budget, reviews and presents quarterly financial reports and recommends revenue sources and investment opportunities to the board.

The Merchandise and Benefits Committee reviews proposed alumni merchandise and membership service benefits from vendors and makes recommendations to the board.

The Nominating Committee encourages and reviews nominations and then recommends the slate for the six director positions annually, and nominates officers in alternate years.

The Outreach Committee plans events and programs that promote the Alumni Association to current students and alumni and connects alumni with other alumni or current students.

The Scholarship Committee selects the recipients of the Alumni Enrichment Awards and is responsible for the implementation, selection and stewardship of the Alumni Scholars Program.

Now that you know more about the Alumni Association programs, I hope you’re interested in getting involved. We are looking for enthusiastic and spirited alumni to serve on our Board of Directors, to make suggestions and share ideas about how to encourage more global alumni engagement and move the University along its Path to Prominence. Three men and three women are selected annually to serve three-year terms, and the full board meets quarterly on the University campus. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 16. See www.UDconnection.com.

I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season!

Sincerely,
Shanté Stargell Hastings ’00EG
