Eligible Clubs*
*Eligible clubs must have paid current dues in order for members to compete in the Philadelphia Area Figure Skating Championships. Eligible Clubs who have not received a bill for current dues or who have not yet joined the Association of Philadelphia Area Figure Skating Clubs (APAFSC) should contact the Secretary, Theresa Foley (215) 508-1737.
The competition will be conducted in accordance with the rules of the 2001-2002 RULEBOOK OF THE USFSA, incorporating the new requirements for the 2002-2003 season. All skaters must be members in good standing of the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA). They must belong to a member club of the Philadelphia Area Association or be an individual member of the USFSA residing in the Philadelphia Area. Only skaters who designate a Philadelphia Area Club as HOME CLUB may put their points toward the BENJAMIN LEE TROPHY for the most points accrued by a club in the competition. Please note, however, that one partner in dance or pairs may live outside the area.
A final schedule of events will be mailed to all clubs and will be available as soon as possible after the close of entries on March 16, 2002. Knowledge of the final schedule is the personal responsibility of each entrant. With the exception of the first event in the morning, competitors are required to check in a minimum of one (1) hour before their scheduled event.
In order to encourage participation, there are no combined events. Short programs and freeskating will be separate events. Compulsory dances, original dance and free dance will also be separate events. Winners from prior years may not re-enter the following events: Singles (except Senior), Intermediate, Novice and Junior Dance. A partner of a previous winning team may re-enter the event with a new partner. SKATERS MAY SKATE UP ONE LEVEL IN ALL EVENTS. Date of birth is required on every entry form. Age and test status as of March 16, 2002 will determine the competitor's eligibility.
In any event where entries exceed fifteen (15) skaters, skaters will be divided by age into smaller groups. If no competition is available in a category, a skater may exhibit, if time allows. However, no trophy will be awarded.
Philadelphia Area Medals will be awarded to the top four (4) skaters in each event. For trophy events, a skate-off will determine the winner of the trophy. A memento will be awarded to the winner of each trophy event. Only the winner will be announced. Special trophies will be awarded for: EXCELLENCE IN FREESKATING: The Wissahickon Skating Club Trophy for excellence in freeskating goes to the Novice, Junior, or Senior skater with the highest freeskating score. ARTISTIC PERFORMANCE: The Bulletin Trophy for Artistic Performance goes to the Novice, Junior, or Senior skater judged during their freestyle performance by an independent panel of non-skating judges to determine the most artistically expressive performance. CLUB ACCRUING THE MOST POINTS: The top three skaters or teams in each separate event accrue points for their respective clubs. The Benjamin F. Lee Trophy is awarded to the club with the most points at the finish of the competition.
The entry forms are enclosed separately. Entries must be postmarked no later than March 16, 2002. Postage metered mail will not be accepted as proof of timely mailing. Send completed entries with the appropriate fees to: 2002 Philadelphia Areas Questions should be directed to (302) 378-6977.
The entry fees are $65.00 for the first event, $30.00 for each event thereafter, and $65.00 per couple for pairs and dance events. Individual members of the USFSA must pay a non-member fee of $5.00 per event in addition to the entry fee. Late entries and refunds will be accepted at the discretion of the competition committee.
Groups will be judged separately with awards for each group. There will be a skate-off held for the group winners for trophy events.
All events will be held at The Pond Ice Arena Ice Rinks in Newark, DE. The ice surfaces measure two hundred (200) feet by one hundred (100) feet and two hundred (200) by eighty five (85) feet. SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED in The Pond Ice Rinks. Flash photography will not be permitted during events.
If practice ice is available a schedule will be sent with the tentative competition schedule after the close of entries.
A tentative schedule will be mailed to competitors as soon as possible after the entry deadline (March 16, 2002). To receive a tentative schedule, you must enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with your entry. A final schedule of events will be mailed to member clubs as soon as it becomes available.
Only cassettes will be accepted. They must be clearly marked with the competitor's name and event. Please submit the cassettes at the registration desk upon arrival (at least one hour before your scheduled event). Please pick up the cassette promptly after the event. The University of Delaware Figure Skating Club assumes no responsibility or liability due to loss or damage to any cassette. All possible care will be taken, however, all competitors should have duplicate cassettes with them at their scheduled event in case of problems with the original tape.
Upon arrival, please register at the Registration Desk. You will receive skater's information and a schedule packet.
There will be NO admission charge for spectators.
Professional video taping will be available at the competition. If personal video taping is done, only battery operated equipment will be permitted.

INTERMEDIATE SHORT PROGRAM: Skaters who have passed the Intermediate Freeskating Test and no higher. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 3.08 and SSR 3.09. The time limit is 2 minutes (2:00) as per SSR 3.10. NOVICE SHORT PROGRAM: Skaters who have passed the Novice Freeskating Test and no higher. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 3.06 and SSR 3.07. The time limit is 2 minutes and 15 seconds (2:15) as per SSR 3.10. Please note that the jump preceeded by connecting steps shall be a double lutz. JUNIOR SHORT PROGRAM: Skaters who have passed the Junior Freeskating Test and no higher. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 3.04 (group A) and SSR 3.05 (group A). The time limit is 2 minutes and 40 seconds (2:40) as per SSR 3.10. SENIOR SHORT PROGRAM: Skaters who have passed the Senior Freeskating Test. Short program is in accordance with SSR 3.02 and SSR 3.03. The time limit is 2 minutes and 40 seconds (2:40) as per SSR 3.10.
NO-TEST: Skaters who have not passed any USFSA Freeskating Test. No axels and no double jumps. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.12. Program duration is one minute (1:00) to one and one-half minutes (1:30). PRE-PRELIMINARY: Skaters who have passed the Pre-Preliminary Freeskating Test and no higher. No double jumps. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.11. Program duration is one minute (1:00) to one and one-half minutes (1:30). PRELIMINARY: Skaters who have passed the Preliminary Freeskating Test and no higher. Skaters may perform an axel and up to two different double jumps. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.10. Program duration is one and one-half minutes (1:30) per SSR 14.00. PRE-JUVENILE: Skaters who have passed the Pre-Juvenile Freeskating Test and no higher. Skaters may perform and axel and up to four different double jumps. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.09. Program duration is two minutes (2:00) per SSR 14.00. JUVENILE: Skaters who have passed the Juvenile Freeskating Test and no higher, and are 12 years of age or under. No triple jumps. Skaters may perform an unlimited number of double jumps. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.08. Program duration is two minutes (2:00) per SSR 14.00. OPEN JUVENILE: Skaters who have passed the Juvenile Freeskating Test and no higher, but are 13 years of age or older as of March 16, 2002. No triple jumps. Skaters may perform an unlimited number of double jumps. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.08. Program duration is two minutes (2:00). INTERMEDIATE: Skaters who have passed the Intermediate Freeskating Test and no higher. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.07. Program duration is two and one-half minutes (2:30) as per SSR 14.00. NOVICE: Skaters who have passed the Novice Freeskating Test and no higher. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.06. Program duration is three minutes (3:00) for ladies, three and one-half minutes (3:30) for men as per SSR 14.00. JUNIOR: Skaters who have passed the Junior Freeskating Test and no higher. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.05. Program duration is three and one-half minutes (3:30) for ladies, four minutes (4:00) for men as per SSR 14.00. SENIOR: Skaters who have passed the Senior Freeskating Test. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 4.04. Program duration is four minutes (4:00) for ladies, four and one-half minutes (4:30) for men as per SSR 14.00. ADULT BRONZE: Skaters 25 years of age or older who have passed the Adult Bronze Freeskating Test and no higher. No axels and no double jumps permitted. Program length not to exceed one minute and forty seconds (1:40) as per SSR 14.00. ADULT SILVER: Skaters 25 years of age or older who have passed the Adult Silver Freeskating Test and no higher. No double jumps permitted. Program length not to exceed two minutes and ten seconds (2:10) as per SSR 14.00. ADULT GOLD: Skaters 25 years of age or older who have passed the Adult Gold Freeskating Test. Program length not to exceed two minutes and forty seconds (2:40) as per SSR 14.00.

SIMILAR PAIRS: Two persons of the same gender skating pairs. No other restrictions. Program duration is three minutes (3:00). JUVENILE PAIRS: Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 6.07. One skater must have passed the Juvenile Pair Test. Program duration is two minutes (2:00). INTERMEDIATE PAIRS: Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 6.06. One skater must have passed the Intermediate Pair Test. Program duration is three minutes (3:00). NOVICE PAIRS SHORT PROGRAM: Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 5.04. One skater must have passed the Novice Pair Test. Program duration may not exceed two minutes and fifteen seconds (2:15). NOVICE PAIRS FREESKATING: Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 6.05. One skater must have passed the Junior Pair Test. Program duration is four minutes (4:00). SENIOR PAIRS SHORT PROGRAM: Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 5.02. One skater must have passed the Senior Pair Test. Program duration may not exceed two minutes and forty seconds (2:40). SENIOR PAIRS FREESKATING: Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 6.03. One skater must have passed the Senior Pair Test. Program duration is four minutes and thirty seconds (4:30).
Note: For each compulsory dance, the number of patterns to be skated for competition is prescribed by CR 12.76 and is also listed on the descriptive page accompanying the dance diagram. The referee may decide to require fewer patterns than specified, but not more. PRE-JUVENILE COMPULSORY DANCE: Open only to competitors who have not reached the age of 14 years by the close of entries. Both partners shall have passed the Preliminary Moves in the Field test and at least two Preliminary Dances, but no higher than the Pre-Bronze Dance test. (See rulebook page 69.) Initial Round: Canasta Tango, Swing Dance. No final round will be skated. JUVENILE COMPULSORY DANCE: Open only to competitors who have not reached the age of 16 years before the close of entries. Both partners must have passed the Preliminary Dance Test and the Juvenile Moves in the Field Test. Initial Round: Fiesta Tango, Hickory Hoedown. No final round will be skated. JUVENILE FREE DANCE: Open only to competitors who have not reached the age of 16 years before the close of entries. Both partners must have passed the Preliminary Dance Test and the Juvenile Moves in the Field Test. Will be conducted in accordance with SSR 12.00. Program length will not exceed one minute and thirty seconds (1:30). INTERMEDIATE COMPULSORY DANCE: Open only to competitors who have not reached the age of 18 years by the close of entries. Both partners must have passed the Bronze Dance Test and the Intermediate Moves in the Field Test. Initial Round: Hickory Hoedown, European Waltz. No final round will be skated. INTERMEDIATE FREE DANCE: Open only to competitors who have not reached the age of 18 years by the close of entries. Both partners must have passed the Bronze Dance Test, the Intermediate Free Dance Test, and the Intermediate Moves in the Field Test. The two-minute (2:00) Free Dance will be conducted in accordance with SSR 12.00. NOVICE COMPULSORY DANCE: Both partners must have passed one dance of the Silver Dance Test, and at least the Novice Moves in the Field Test. Initial Round: Rocker Foxtrot, Paso Doble. No final round will be skated. NOVICE FREE DANCE: Both partners must have passed one dance of the Silver Dance Test , the Novice Free Dance Test (but no higher), and at least the Novice Moves in the Field Test. The two and one-half minute (2:30) free dance will be conducted in accordance with SSR 12.00. JUNIOR COMPULSORY DANCE: Both partners must have passed at least two Pre Gold dances and the Junior Moves in the Field Test. Initial Round: Westminster Waltz, Blues. No final round will be skated. JUNIOR ORIGINAL DANCE: Both partners must have passed at least two Pre Gold dances, the Junior Free Dance Test, but not the Gold Free Dance Test, and the Junior Moves in the Field Test. The two minute and thirty second (2:30) original dance will be conducted in accordance with SSR 10.00. Rhythm: Spanish Medley. JUNIOR FREE DANCE: Both partners must have passed at least two Pre Gold dances, the Junior Free Dance Test, but not the Gold Free Dance Test, and the Junior Moves in the Field Test. The three minute (3:00) free dance will be conducted in accordance with SSR 12.00. SENIOR COMPULSORY DANCE: Both partners must have passed the Gold Dance Test and the Senior Moves in the Field Test. Initial Round: Blues, Quickstep. No final round will be skated. SENIOR ORIGINAL DANCE: Both partners must have passed the Gold Dance Test, the Senior Free Dance Test, and the Senior Moves in the Field Test. The four minute (4:00) free dance will be conducted in accordance with SSR 12.00. GENERATION GAP DANCE: Partners must have an age difference of at least 20 years. No test restrictions. Initial round: Swing Dance, Willow Waltz. No final round will be skated. ADULT PRE-BRONZE DANCE: Both partners must have completed the Pre-Bronze Dance Test, but no higher than the Bronze Dance test. Minimum age for both partners is 25 years. Initial Round: Rhythm Blues, Swing Dance. No final round will be skated. ADULT BRONZE DANCE: One partner must have passed at least one Pre-Silver or Adult Pre-Silver Dance; the other partner must have passed at least one Bronze Dance. Neither partner may have passed more than one Silver or Adult Silver Dance. Minimum age for both partners is 25 years. Initial round: Willow Waltz, Ten-Fox. No final round will be skated. ADULT SILVER DANCE: One partner must have passed at least one Silver or Adult Silver Dance; the other must have passed at least one Pre-Silver or Adult Pre-Silver Dance. Neither partner may have passed more than one pre-Gold or Adult Pre-Gold Dance. Minimum age for both partners is 25 years. Initial round: Foxtrot, American Waltz. No final round will be skated.
