University of Delaware Figure Skating Club November 2002 Newsletter |
The Competitive season is off and running. Congratulations to all of our members who have already competed at regionals and sectionals or other competitions. We wish you continued success this season.
The Club, in conjunction with the University of Delaware and members of the Ice Skating Science Degree program hosted the National Collegiate Figure Skating Championships in August. Approximately 55 skaters, all full-time college students, competed in Junior and Senior events. Members of our collegiate community competed, including Melissa Parker, Kelsey Davidson, Cindy Hsieh, and Melissa Topakbashian. This is the first time that the Club has hosted a National competition, and the comments from skaters and officials were very favorable. I’d like to express my sincerest thanks to our expert group of volunteers who devoted many hours to making this competition so successful.
As most of your are aware the Association of Philadelphia Area FSC’s will be acting as the local USFSA representative for the 2003 Skate America. The competition is being held in Reading, PA at the Sovereign Bank Arena in late October 2003. The clubs in our area will be participating in several aspects. Members over 18 will be able to volunteer for positions in registration and ice monitors for practice ice. Younger skaters will have the opportunity to participate as sweepers and awards presenters.
Sweepers must be:
Between the age of 9-12 by 1-1-03
Must have passed the Pre-Preliminary FS test by 1-1-03
Must demonstrate their ability to "sweep"
Must demonstrate two different stops on ice
Awards presenters:
Must be between the ages of 12-15 by 1-1-03
Will demonstrate carrying the pillow and flower bouquets
Background checks will be performed. Volunteer forms will be available in the near future. Questions may be forwarded by email at usfsanj@aol.com or by phone to Cheryl Wood at 302-945-9590.
The 2003 US National Send-Off Ice Skating Exhibition, will be held this year at the Fred Rust Ice Arena on Saturday, January 4, 2003 at 6pm. Ticket information will be available in December 2002.
Did you know that you can earn free ice privileges for Club Ice (5-6:30 p.m. on Sundays)? For each 45-minute Club Ice session that you monitor, you earn a corresponding free Club ice session for you or for your family member who skates. We currently have a regular monitor for Club Ice, but we are in need of backup monitors to fill in for our monitor when she cannot be there. If you are interested in becoming a monitor for Club Ice, please contact the Club Office at (302) 831-4686.
Please Note: If your address changes, please notify the UDFSC as soon as possible. This will ensure important documents as well as the newsletter, get to you in a timely manner.

Please put your USFSA number on your test application. If you have not received it yet put "applied."
When completing your pair or dance test application, please be sure to include the partner's name and coaches signatures. Directions are on the back of all test applications.

Parents may want to screen skater fan mail to be sure there is no inappropriate content. Fan mail sent to the USFSA will be forwarded to the skater with a warning letter attached.
If you are interested in attending judges' school, the UDFSC may be able to offer some financial assistance. Write to us at ud-fsc@udel.edu or call (302) 831-4686. Information on judging is available at the USFSA web site at www.usfsa.org.
Interested in UDFSC synchronized skating teams? Synchronized skating is a choreographed routine skated in unison by 12-24 team members. Teams are assembled by skill level and USFSA age restrictions. Come out and see what it is about! Contact the UDFSC on (302) 831-4686.
Please note that the UDFSC club telephone answering service is manned by volunteers. We will make every attempt to retrieve your telephone calls promptly and forward your questions to the appropriate board member or training center staff. Thank you for your patience in this matter.
Congratulations to the following UDFSC competitors. If you competed in an international event that is not listed, please let us know by calling (302) 831-4686 or writing to us at ud-fsc@udel.edu.
