University of Delaware Figure Skating Club March 2002 Newsletter |
We are very excited to be hosting two major competitions in the next six months: the Philadelphia Areas Championships (April 12-14 at the Pond) and the National Collegiate Championships (August 14-17). Both of these competitions offer many opportunities for our club members to volunteer their time. No prior experience is necessary-we gladly train all those who are willing to help. It's a great way to meet other club members, to show off those special, or not-so-special skills you have that you've been keeping secret. And it's also a lot of fun!
We would like to continue to host competitions at the U of D and the Pond, but we can do that only if we have a pool of volunteers to staff the competitions. We encourage you to devote a couple hours once or twice a year. Most of the volunteer positions are really easy to do. What better way to spend some time with a lot of really nice people who all love the same sport!
I look forward to meeting many of you at Philadelphia Areas and the National Collegiate Championships.
Congratulations to all of our skaters who have competed in National and International competition. We have been very well represented at Junior Nationals, Nationals, Four Continents, and the Olympics. We offer our best wishes to teams participating in the National Synchronized Skating Championships and the World and Junior World Championships.
The USFSA will be conducting "National Skating Week" across the US from March 4-10, 2002. Historically the USFSA has seen a large increase in new membership following an Olympic season. Since its inception in 1985, the USFSA's Skate with US program has enrolled over 900,000 skaters aged 3-94 offering people of all ages the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of ice skating from professionally trained instructors across the US. For more information, go to the USFSA's web site. Also check the bulletin board at the front of the Rust Arena for upcoming events.
The UDFSC is proud to note that two of our members were recognized for scholastic achievement by the USFSA during a special ceremony at the 2002 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Los Angeles, California.
The UDFSC student-athletes honored as members of the Chevrolet/USFSA Scholastic Honors Team were Debbie Blinder and Patrick Connelly. Congratulations on your achievement as athletes and scholars.
Ice Arena Training Center and Summer Camp information is available at this website or by writing ud-skating@udel.edu. Summer camp begins on June 3, 2002 through August 23, 2002.
The following test sessions are scheduled. If you plan to test, be sure to get your applications in by the deadlines listed, as these sessions are likely to fill quickly. Applications must be in the lockbox by 5:00 p.m. on the application due dates.
Dianne Nichols, VP and Test Co-Chair
If you need to cancel a test, you must do so in writing a minimum of a week before the test to receive a refund. Put your written cancellation notice in the UDFSC lockbox in the Rust Arena.
Please put your USFSA number on your test application. If you have not received it yet put "applied."
When completing your pair or dance test application, please be sure to include the partner's name and coaches signatures. Directions are on the back of all test applications.
Join us on Sundays in the Rust Ice Arena from 5:00 - 5:45 p.m. for a dance-preferred session and from 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. for a freestyle-preferred session.
The walk-on cost to UDFSC members is $10.00 per session or you may purchase a ticket for $80.00, which reduces the cost to $8.00 per session.
This is an annual competition that is hosted by a different club every year. Last year it was held at Ice Works in Aston. The Philadelphia Association of Figure Skating Clubs is comprised of 27 clubs in the Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Northern Delaware area. Participants in the competition must be members in good standing in one of these clubs.
All events will be held at the Pond Ice Arena. We encourage all skaters to have fun, get started on next year's programs, and enter this competition! Please note that a trophy will be awarded to the club, which accrues the most points!!!
In addition, if anyone would like to volunteer to help make this competition more of a success, please call (302) 378-6977. For more information, see the competition website.
Parents may want to screen skater fan mail to be sure there is no inappropriate content. Fan mail sent to the USFSA will be forwarded to the skater with a warning letter attached.
