Laure Ergin named vice president and general counsel at UD
8:34 a.m., Dec. 2, 2015--Laure Ergin, who has served as associate vice president and deputy general counsel at the University of Delaware for the past five years, has been named vice president and general counsel. Her appointment was effective Nov. 18.
She succeeds Lawrence White, who currently serves as special counsel to the president and will officially retire in December.

"Laure Ergin has a broad range of experience in higher education law and a wealth of knowledge about the University of Delaware that make her ideal for this position," Acting President Nancy M. Targett said in announcing her appointment. "I look forward to working with Laure in her new role."
"It is an honor to take on this position that was first held at this University by my mentor Larry White," Ergin said. "I am excited to lead our great team and to serve the University community."
As the University's chief legal officer, the vice president and general counsel is responsible for the management and supervision of all legal affairs for the University. Reporting to the president, the vice president serves as principal legal advisor to the Board of Trustees, the president and senior staff on litigation, regulatory and contract matters.
As associate vice president at Delaware, Ergin has represented UD on a wide range of issues, including corporate, transactional, nonprofit tax, real estate, academic affairs, intellectual property and immigration. She also provided counsel to executive leadership on the legal rights and responsibilities of the University.
Previously, she was an attorney in the General Counsel's Office at Drexel University for 13 years, serving as Drexel's chief compliance officer for four of those years.
An arbitrator for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, she has lectured for Drexel's School of Education and is a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
She earned her undergraduate and law degrees from Saint Louis University.
