Jeffrey Evans named deputy chief of police at UD

10:15 a.m., April 29, 2016--Jeffrey R. Evans, retired major with the Delaware State Police, has been named deputy chief of police at the University of Delaware, UD Police Chief Patrick Ogden has announced.

Evans, who is a UD alumnus, will have responsibility for compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act, as well as the department’s human resources, records, budget, payroll and professional standards, including internal affairs, accreditation, training and vehicles and equipment.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

“Major Evans brings a distinguished record of service and leadership experience to his new role,” Ogden said. “In addition, his strong ties to the University as an alumnus and a former student worker in our campus police unit give him a valuable perspective on the University community.”

Evans retired from the Delaware State Police in March after a 29-year career there.  In 1987, he joined the State Police, assigned to Troop 9 during his Field Training Officers’ Program and then later assigned to uniformed patrol at Troop 6 in Wilmington. In 1990 he became a member of the Aviation Unit as a paramedic, was promoted to sergeant in 1994 and to lieutenant in charge of the Aviation Unit in 2000. He was promoted to captain in 2007 and remained with the Aviation Unit until 2010,when he was transfered to Troop 6 as commander. Evans was promoted to the rank of major in 2014, when he joined the Executive Staff as the administrative officer. 

A graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in sociology, Evans worked in the department as a student, serving as a student aide, a member of the UD Emergency Care Unit and as a full-time security officer.

A lifetime member of Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, he is a 2006 graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
