Inaugural class graduates from Community Police Academy
12 p.m., Nov. 24, 2014--The University of Delaware Police Department marked the completion of its inaugural Community Police Academy with a special ceremony for the graduates, held recently in the Gallery of the Perkins Student Center.
The Community Police Academy is a new initiative aimed at providing citizens with the opportunity to receive eight weeks of both classroom and field instruction on the various responsibilities facing UD Police officers.

Attendees also are made aware of the procedures and techniques used by officers in a variety of scenarios, together with the rationale and justification in support of these procedures or techniques.
Open to students, faculty, staff and the community, the academy featured an overview of the department and a tour, instruction on defensive tactics and special unit demonstration, crime scene management and evidence processing, and the opportunity to ride along with an officer and engage in target practice.
Speaking at the recent ceremony were UD Police Chief Patrick Ogden and Newark Mayor Polly A. Sierer, who was one of the academy graduates.
Other members of the inaugural class were Peter W. Brakhage, Christopher W. Castillo, Philip Cucinotta, Anthony Goldston, Marlene Hartman, Casey R. Kinna, Regina M. Phillips and Jessica W. Rickmond.
