8:25 a.m., July 30, 2014--The Blue Hen Leadership Program (BHLP), the University of Delaware’s multi-tiered student leadership certification program, was recently awarded the Outstanding Program Award by the Association of Leadership Educators.

The award, presented to BHLP at the association’s annual conference on July 16, is designed to recognize outstanding leadership programs that demonstrate a clear impact on leadership education.

Honors Stories

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

Susan Luchey, associate director of University Student Centers, and Matthew Creasy, program coordinator, were on hand to accept the award on behalf of BHLP. Prior recipients of this honor include Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Purdue University and Oklahoma State University.

The Association of Leadership Educators is a well-respected resource for exchanging and developing ideas, scholarship, and practices that impact the field of leadership education. Recipients of the Outstanding Leadership Program award must have data that clearly demonstrates the sustainability of their program and the positive impact that it has had on individuals, organizations, institutions or communities.

The Blue Hen Leadership Program has enjoyed robust growth in recent years, including a move to a new Student Leadership Center on the lower level of Trabant University Center in September 2013.

BHLP currently offers four tiers of leadership development that are open to all UD students. A wide-range of opportunities such as a summer leadership experience for incoming freshmen, conferences, workshops, and service trips are provided for students to question, explore, understand, and apply leadership that can affect positive change.

The program focuses on six core competencies: personal leadership, organizational leadership, communication, global understanding, community stewardship, and management skills.

Curriculum is based on several leadership models, including the Leadership Challenge, the Social Change Model and Transformational Leadership.

Students may participate in components of the program or commit to the full certification.

In the past academic year, close to 1,000 students participated in at least one of the more than 100 BHLP events that were offered, and 359 students committed to the full certification in one of the tiers.

More information on BHLP can be found at the website.
