New housing option
UD to offer all gender housing option beginning next fall
10:53 a.m., Jan. 5, 2015--Effective with the fall 2015 semester, the University of Delaware will offer upper division undergraduate students an all gender housing option as part of the University's ongoing commitment to provide every student with a welcoming and inclusive campus.
The new option, which is in keeping with the University's non-discrimination policy and national trends in college housing, supports those students who may identify as transgender, are questioning their gender identity, do not wish to prescribe to gender classifications or are uncomfortable with a same-sex roommate.

"We believe this option will provide a more comfortable living environment and on-campus home for some of our students," said Kathleen Kerr, executive director of Residence Life and Housing at UD. "The goal is to create an environment that acknowledges and respects the diverse nature and needs of our student body."
All gender housing, which will be available to sophomores, juniors and seniors who are at least 18 years of age, will be provided in suite-style double and single rooms sharing a bathroom. While there is no all gender housing option for first year students, those who have an interest in this kind of housing option should contact Residence Life and Housing. Students must select all gender housing and roommates must be mutually selected. This option will never be forced on a student.
The location of all gender housing will be on the Laird Campus, but the specific residence hall has not yet been determined.
Additional information about the all gender housing option is available on the Residence Life and Housing website.
