UD's Jewish Studies Program announces spring lecture series
9:29 a.m., Feb. 13, 2015--The University of Delaware Jewish Studies Program, housed in the Frank and Yetta Chaiken Center for Jewish Studies, has announced a lecture series for the 2015 spring semester.
The lectures are part of the course “Issues and Ideas in Jewish Studies” (JWST 201-010) and are open to the public.

The series will be held from 12:20-1:10 p.m. on Wednesdays in 218 Gore Hall.
Lectures are scheduled as follows:
Feb. 18 – Burt Abrams, professor in UD’s Department of Economics, will give a lecture on Milton Friedman, a Nobel Prize winner in the field of economic science.
Feb. 25 –Leslie Reidel, professor in UD’s Department of Theatre and the Resident Ensemble Players, will speak on “Show Biz: A Jewish Perspective.”
March 4 –Ralph Begleiter, Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication, Distinguished Journalist in Residence and director of the Center for Political Communication, will speak on the careers of notable journalists such as Barbara Walters, Gloria Steinem, Mike Wallace, Carl Bernstein, Seymour Hirsh and Matt Drudge.
March 11 – Rabbi Michael Beals of Congregation Beth Shalom in Wilmington will discuss Theodor Herzl, one of the leading pioneers of modern political Zionism.
March 18 – Steven Elliott, a Ph.D. candidate at Temple University, will give a lecture on the career of Major General Maurice Rose, who served in the United States Army during World War I and World War II.
March 25 – Rabbi Micah Becker-Klein of Temple Beth El in Newark will discuss Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, one of the founders of Reconstructionist Judaism.
April 1 – No class (spring break).
April 8 – Rachael Beyer, a doctoral student at UD, will give a lecture on Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg.
April 15 – Robert Denemark, professor in UD’s Department of Political Science and International Relations, will give a lecture on Eugene Rabinowitch, an American biophysicist who was a prominent critic on the use of nuclear weapons.
April 22 – Dan Michelson, an archivist at the Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, will discuss the career of David Sarnoff, an American businessman and pioneer in the fields of radio and television.
April 29 – Rabbi Eliezer Sneiderman of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life at UD, will discuss the life of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the 20th century.
May 6 – Jay Halio, professor emeritus of English and director of the Jewish Studies Program, will discuss the works of American novelist Philip Roth.
May 13 – Rebecca Davis, associate professor in UD’s Department of History and Department of Women and Gender Studies, will speak on the topics of Jewish Americans and feminism.
