Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

A commemorative flag display featuring 1,200 banner bearing different colors will be held beginning at noon, Monday, April 13, on the University’s North Green. Each color represents a population targeted in the Holocaust. A dinner and discussion on “70 Years Later: Where Do We Go From Here?” will be held at 7 p.m. at Hillel, 47 W. Delaware Ave.

The movie Paragraph 175 will be shown at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, in 117 Gore Hall, to be followed by a discussion. The film chronicles the lives of members of the LGBT community who were persecuted by the Nazis. The screening is co-sponsored by Haven.

The Mitzvah Project play and discussion will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, in 100 Kirkbride Hall. The play features Roger Grunwald, the child of a Holocaust survivor, who tells the story of Christoph Rosenberg, a German who was half-Jewish. The discussion will explore topics such as assimilation intermarriage, identity and conversion. There will be a short Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, memorial service.

On Thursday, April 16, a “6 for 6” name reading will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the North Green. The six-hour reading will honor the six million Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust.

Holocaust Education Week will close with two activities on Friday, April 17. A lunch and learn program with Isaac Dostis, a Romaniote Jew, will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Hillel. Dostis will speak about how the Holocaust affected his community in Greece. Hero Shabbat will be held at Hillel in the evening, with services at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7.
