2:03 p.m., April 9, 2015--The Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) invites science, engineering and social science doctoral students at the University of Delaware to apply for the DENIN Environmental Fellows Program.

The 2015 fellowships begin in September and will provide two years of support for three Ph.D. students to carry out environmentally relevant research that demonstrates a clear link to societal needs and benefits.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

“We’re looking for those special students with real leadership potential, who will go on to make a lasting contribution, both scientifically and societally,” says Jeanette Miller, associate director of DENIN.

DENIN Fellows work together as a team in ways that complement their primary academic programs. Fellows are expected to participate in and lead a select number of events and activities each year, such as symposia or seminar series. DENIN will provide opportunities for professional development and networking with domestic and international scientists and leaders.

“Serving as a DENIN Fellow has given me the opportunity to work with a talented, diverse group of graduate students,” says Audrey Gamble, a student in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences who was one of four fellows selected in 2014. “We strive to bridge the gap between science and society, not only in our own research, but also by planning outreach efforts.”

“This fellowship gives you a chance to stretch the muscles that being a Ph.D. student neglects but that you’ll need to be successful in your future career,” adds Jean Brodeur, a fellow in the School of Marine Science and Policy. “It’s incredibly rewarding to prepare for a wider role in the world than simply piling up data.”

The fellowships include a $30,000 annual stipend. A cost-of-education allowance is also permitted; applicants may request up to $6,680 per year to be used for tuition, research supplies or research-related travel.

Fellows will be selected by a committee of internal and external reviewers. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 15. For complete application instructions, visit the DENIN Environmental Fellows webpage.

The 2015 DENIN Environmental Fellows Program is supported by Delaware’s National Science Foundation EPSCoR grant.
