A safe Homecoming

Student Wellness, police encourage students to make safe choices this Homecoming

8:41 a.m., Oct. 1, 2013--As University of Delaware Homecoming week approaches, Student Wellness and Health Promotion and local police remind students to make safe decisions.

“There are so many exciting events that the UD community plans for Homecoming that don’t involve drinking or put students in danger of risky situations,” said Nancy Chase, director of Student Wellness and Health Promotion.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Registered student organizations and departments across campus have created events including a pep rally, a comedy show, movies, athletics, a dodge ball tournament and much more.

As part of the Joint Agency Alcohol Initiative, University of Delaware Police and Newark Police will have an increased presence and increased enforcement efforts during Homecoming Weekend.

Student Wellness and Health Promotion and UDPD encourage students to practice general safety behaviors such as avoiding walking alone at night, staying clear of the railroad tracks, keeping doors locked and reporting any suspicious activity.

“Students can always take an active role in promoting their own safety and the safety of others,” said Chase, reminding students to practice safe behaviors such as never leaving a drink unattended, using a designated driver, recognizing the signs of alcohol poisoning and calling 911 for help.

Students can follow UDPD and Student Wellness on social media for tips and resources for responsible and safe decision-making.
