New 'Random Acts of Poetry' series will showcase work of UD poets


9:17 a.m., Oct. 18, 2013--The University of Delaware’s Department of English is looking for poets to have their work showcased in a new program on campus and in the larger community.

The “Random Acts of Poetry” series is accepting submissions through Friday, Oct. 25. Twice each semester, selected poems will be displayed on posters around campus and the city of Newark. At the end of the academic year, the “Random Poets” will be invited to read their work at a special event.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Organizers say the series has been created to bring together writers who believe that poetry is essential and that “it would be a better world if someone were to surround us with poetry.” The program was developed in collaboration with the English honor society Sigma Tau Delta and organizations for student writers.
