Oct. 12: Duke Farms trip

Campus community members invited to tour New Jersey's Duke Farms


9:38 a.m., Oct. 2, 2013--Members of the University of Delaware campus community are invited to participate in a tour of the Duke Farms in Hillsborough, N.J., at noon Saturday, Oct. 12.

The tour will be led by Thom Almendinger, Duke Farms director of stewardship. The trip is cosponsored by UD’s Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture, the Society for Ecological Restoration and the Society of Natural History of Delaware.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Duke farms is a 2,740-acre park which was one of the former homes of Doris Duke, the tobacco heiress. It has nine man-made lakes, miles of stone walls, 56 geothermal wells, an orientation center that is platinum LEED, a native plant nursery and wildflower meadows. The fields are no longer mowed so that they are attractive to grassland birds. There is also a webcam on an eagle’s nest.

Invasive plants have been removed from 380 acres, and native species have been replanted on 230 acres. There are 150 American chestnut trees and several champion trees.
