New vice president

Dawn Thompson named UD vice president for student life


8:51 a.m., Oct. 29, 2013--Dawn Thompson, who has served as interim vice president for student life at the University of Delaware since August, will become vice president, effective Nov. 1, Provost Domenico Grasso announced today. 

Thompson joined UD in 2008 as assistant vice president for student life and was named dean of students and associate vice president for student life in 2009, a role she filled until her interim appointment in August.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

"Dawn Thompson brings to this post an impressive range of skills and knowledge in a variety of student life areas," Grasso said. "That extensive experience, combined with her distinguished tenure at UD, make her the ideal person to direct our talented student life team. 

"Dawn's leadership here at UD has demonstrated her commitment to our students and their success and to enriching the services and opportunities we are able to offer them," he said. "I look forward to working with her in this new position."

"I have the highest respect for our talented Student Life staff; together we will continue to provide programs and services that support the academic enterprise beyond the classroom in a way that complements and reinforces overall institutional academic expectations and excellence."

Before coming to UD, Thompson was executive director of housing and residence life at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. 

In addition to her 11 years at the University of Massachusetts, Thompson has held administrative assignments at Ithaca (N.Y.) College, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.

A graduate of Wittenberg University, she holds a master's degree in student personnel work in higher education from The Ohio State University. 

Reporting to the provost, Thompson will have responsibility for UD's Division of Student Life, which supports the University's educational mission through student advocacy, innovative services and programs that promote learning, personal development and well-being, and academic success. 

The division's 11 departments include the Career Services Center, the Center for Black Culture, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Office of the Dean of Students, New Student Orientation, the Office of Student Conduct, Residence Life and Housing, Student Health Services, Student Services for Athletes, Student Wellness and Health Promotion, and University Student Centers.
