The United Way of Delaware is the largest fundraising organization in the state, supporting more than 100 agencies with such key goals as helping children and youth achieve their potential, promoting financial stability and independence, and improving health. This year's campaign kicked off with a special event for UD's United Way champions on Oct. 7 in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.

Tom LaPenta, chief human resources officer at UD, hosted the event and noted that over the last 15 years, the UD family has contributed more than $2.9 million to the United Way of Delaware.

"I know we can meet our $185,000 goal," LaPenta said. "In fact, I know we can match last year's total: $192,000."

The annual Pacesetters campaign of senior UD administrators and the UD retirees campaign have already raised $43,078.

"If anyone's up to this challenge, it's the people of UD," LaPenta said. "I've seen them in action. Not matter how much they give to this University -- and by any measure of talent, energy and passion, it's a lot -- they always step up and give just as much to the greater Delaware community, to individuals and families in need. That's what neighbors do."

The University of Delaware will be participating in a Diaper Drive for Delaware 211 Oct. 14 through Oct. 31, and two Days of Caring projects for Exceptional Care for Children, Delaware’s only 24-hour, skilled pediatric nursing facility for transitional or long-term care. The dates will be announced soon.
