Announcements

Albright College and UD’s School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA) have finalized an agreement that offers Albright graduates streamlined admission to select SPPA master’s programs. As part of the agreement, Albright students will have a choice of three graduate programs in the SPPA at the UD’s main campus in Newark. These programs include a master of arts in urban affairs and public policy, master of public administration, and master of arts in historic preservation. Students are eligible for conditional acceptance into a program during their final year at Albright, prior to the completion of their undergraduate degrees. The application fee will be waived for prospective students who submit a required letter of intent. “Our new agreement with the School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Delaware is a great fit for Albright’s strong social science programs in particular, and offers Albright students, from a range of majors, an outstanding opportunity to continue their education in one of three master’s programs,” said Joseph Thomas, Albright College’s dean of undergraduate studies. The partnership was facilitated, in part, by Albright alumnus Danilo Yanich, associate professor and director of SPPA’s master of urban affairs and public policy graduate program.

Cheryl Wilson, an alumna who received a doctorate in English from UD and is an associate professor in the Klein Family School of Communications Design at the University of Baltimore, has been named a special assistant to UB President Robert L. Bogomolny for student success. In this role, Wilson will work collaboratively with units across the UB campus to support the success of upper-division students, focusing on such areas as academic achievement, degree completion and student advancement. She will continue to serve as the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Fellow and as director of the bachelor of arts in English program.

Awards

Vinu Krishnan, doctoral candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has been named the 2013 graduate winner in the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering’s international student poster competition. Krishnan’s poster was on “Nanopharmaceuticals for Effective Management of Hematologic Malignancies – Formulation and Pre-clinical Validation.” The award was presented during the ISPE annual meeting held Nov. 3-6 in Washington, D.C.

Presentations

Kristi Kiick, deputy dean of engineering, visited Newark Charter High School Thursday, Nov. 14, to speak with more than 100 high school freshmen about careers in engineering. Kiick, a materials scientist and biomedical engineer, shared her journey to engineering and discussed her research on the use of resilin — a natural protein found in crickets and other insects—to treat vocal fold disorders in humans. After the presentation, NCS freshman talked with UD engineering students and participated in hands-on activities that included solar cricket observations, hydrogel use and other engineering related activities provided by the UD K-12 Engineering program.

L. Rebecca Johnson Melvin, librarian, Manuscripts and Archives Department, and curator of the Joseph R. Biden Jr. Senatorial Papers, presented "The Bringhurst-Shipley-Hargraves Family Papers: Provenance Is the First Principle of Archival Management" at the Rockwood Museum, Wilmington, Del., Nov. 3, 2013.

Margaret D. Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities, presented a paper at American University's fourth annual Feminist Art History conference in Washington, D.C., Nov. 8. Robinson also delivered a lecture on “The Digital Frankenstein Notebooks” at the New York Public Library on Oct. 31 for the launch of the “Shelley-Godwin Archive” that makes freely available digital images and transcriptions of the manuscripts of Percy and Mary Shelley and their circle. The first book to be digitized by the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) is Robinson’s The Frankenstein Notebooks, 2 vols. (Garland, 1996). In addition, Robinson’s work was discussed in Jennifer Howard’s “Frankenstein's Manuscript Draws Its First Breath Online,” an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education on Oct. 30.
