10:32 a.m., Nov. 15, 2013--Dana Copeland, a freshman early childhood education major, was the first student to sign up for on-campus housing for the 2014-15 academic year.

“I’m from New York City,” Copeland said.  “And knowing real estate in the city, I know the importance of getting in early to get what you want.”

By applying for on-campus housing during the early bird application period, Copeland received five priority points, which in turn, gets her an earlier room selection time slot.

This year, Residence Life and Housing unveils its new housing management system, which means an entirely new structure for priority in choosing housing for the next academic year.

“Submitting an early bird application is a great way for students to get priority for next year’s housing selection,” said Kathleen Kerr, executive director of Residence Life and Housing. “There will be limited opportunities for students to earn priority points outside of early bird, so I hope that many take advantage of this one, especially if they know now that they want to be on campus next year.”

Just what kind of housing does Copeland want? After touring upper division residence halls on the campus housing bus tours sponsored by Residence Life and Housing, Copeland decided that she wants to live in one of the suites in the Independence Complex.

“I liked Independence, Thomas McKean or James Smith because of the fixtures,” said Copeland of the suite-style housing on the University’s Laird Campus. “There’s also a little more responsibility than in Russell. I’m not ready to cook for myself. Going to the dining hall is like having a personal chef.”
