11:34 a.m., Nov. 26, 2013--The University of Delaware’s 2013 United Way campaign participated in its second “Days of Caring” project on Saturday, Nov. 23, with UD employees from AFSCME Local 439 and other staff working at Exceptional Care for Children (ECC), Delaware’s only 24-hour skilled pediatric nursing facility.

UD’s volunteers were given the task of setting up and decorating for this dinner for the children and their families. They served the meal and cleaned up after the event.

“It was an incredible experience for all involved,” said one of the volunteers. “The children and their families had a wonderful experience, as did the volunteers.”

Since opening its doors in 2006, ECC has been delivering a new and innovative model of care to children who are medically fragile and have technology dependencies. This facility is home to 31 children who otherwise would have to live in a hospital. The ages range from 2 months to 19 years, and each child is provided with his or her own room. The staff and volunteers provide these very special children with an atmosphere as close to a home environment as possible. Some children transition and are able to return home, while others do not.

UD's 2013 United Way campaign has been extended until Dec. 13.
