May 12: 'A Visit With John Updike'

Davison to discuss life, works of John Updike at Newark Senior Center


7:52 a.m., May 6, 2014--Richard Davison, professor emeritus of English at the University of Delaware, will visit the life and works of John Updike during a presentation at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 12, at the Newark Senior Center, 200 Whitechapel Drive.

Updike was America’s top man of letters over the last 50 years, and wrote brilliantly in every genre, Davison said.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Friendly rival of Philip Roth and mentor of Joyce Carol Oates, Updike preceded them on the short list of candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

In his exploration of Updike’s life and works, Davison will read from selected short stories, Rabbit Run (part of Updike’s Rabbit tetralogy, the best fictional record of American from the 1950s to the 1990s), from his essays, and from the poetry which he continue to write up to three weeks before his death.
