10:27 a.m., May 8, 2014--The University of Delaware Collegiate Figure Skating Team (UDFS) held a UDare Skate for the Cure fundraising show on May 3, raising more than $3,400 to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the team’s 2014-15 season.

“This show was different for our team,” said Clara Sherman, UDFS vice president. “We all came together, not only to skate, but to raise money for a larger cause. Knowing that we could raise awareness and funds for both UDFS and JDRF was more than I could have ever imagined.”

Unsung Hero

The One Love Foundation has announced that University of Delaware men's lacrosse standout Elijah Conte has been selected as a winner of the 2016 YRL Unsung Hero Award.

UDFS, winner of the 2014 intercollegiate team national championship, had a chance to showcase the talents of members in a variety of group and solo numbers to hit songs from classic Disney movies including Hercules, Tangled, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast and many others.

Senior UDFS skater Christie Kievit commented that the show “was a really great way to end my college career. It was nice to be able to break free from the pressure of competition and do something fun and theatrical. Figure skating at its heart has always been about performance.”

UDare Skate for the Cure also featured guest skaters Emmanuel Savary, 2009 intermediate men’s national champion and Team USA international competitor, and Carter Jones and Richard Sharpe, the 2014 British national ice dance silver medalists.

“Working together to achieve a common goal with your teammates is that much better when the benefit is for something even greater than your team itself,” said UDFS treasurer and sophomore skater Clarké Snell. “Working with JDRF and every member of the team really brought us together and helped us all show leadership, challenge ourselves, and of course have fun doing it.”
