Summer bike storage

Students, staff asked to take bicycles home or arrange for summer storage

2:55 p.m., May 6, 2014--In an effort to improve and streamline bicycle parking on campus, the University of Delaware Department of Public Safety, Grounds Services, and Parking Services are asking staff members and students leaving for the summer to take their bikes with them.

Every year several hundred abandoned bicycles are tagged, removed and disposed of by the University.

This year officials are taking a proactive approach and asking students and staff members to take their bicycles with them for the summer or officially store them with the University.

Staff members and students who are on campus for the summer may request a “summer bike” tag to display during the month of June to avoid removal. Only bikes registered with Parking Services will be allowed to remain at bike racks for the summer. A waterproof bike seat cover will be sent with every summer bike tag requested.

Requests should be sent to and include the make, model, color and serial number of the bike, along with the owner’s name and UD ID number.

Bike owners who want to have their bike stored on campus for the summer may do so by contacting Parking Services. For $10, a bike will be stored from late May through Sept. 1 in a covered location on campus.

Beginning the Monday after Commencement, UD staff members will be tagging all bicycles in bike racks for removal from campus. Officials expect to begin removing bikes two-to-three days after they have been tagged.

Bicycles attached to anything other than a bike rack (i.e., railings, benches, trees) or causing safety concerns will be removed immediately. This practice will continue throughout the year.
