University alumni activities include painting, wine tasting, leadership lecture

9:34 a.m., March 14, 2014--University of Delaware alumni have a variety of activities from which to choose in March and April.

Included are painting, wine tasting, ice hockey and a President’s Leadership Series lecture by Ingrid Steffensen, an alumna, author, professor and race car driver, on April 9.

The University of Delaware's Nii Attoh-Okine recently published a new book with Cambridge University Press, "Resilience Engineering: Models and Analysis."

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

And, looking ahead, it is never too early to begin making plans for Alumni Weekend, which will be held June 6-8. 

Information on these and other activities is as follows:

Tuesday, March 18, 6 p.m.: Boston board meeting. The Boston Alumni Club will hold its annual open board meeting, along with a happy hour, at the Landsdowne Pub.

Friday, March 21, 7 p.m.: New Castle painting class. A local artist will teach a two-hour BYOB painting class in an event sponsored by the New Castle County Alumni Club in Kennett Square, Pa.

Sunday, March 23, 3 p.m.: Geological Society happy hour. Blue Hens are invited to happy hour at Annie Bailey’s Irish Pub in Lancaster, Pa., in conjunction with the 49th annual meeting of the Northeastern Section of the Geological Society of America

Friday, March 28, 5 p.m.: Hershey Bears hockey game. Lancaster, Pa., alumni will gather for a Hershey Bears ice hockey game against the Albany Devils at the Giant Center in Hershey, with a pre-game reception at the Bears Den at Hershey Lodge.

Friday, March 28, 6:30 p.m.: South Florida wine tasting. The second annual Blue Hen Wine Tasting in south Florida will be held at the Boynton Beach Wine Cellar. Alumni will gather for great wine and great company, in addition to light food.

Sunday, March 30, 9:30 a.m.: National Aquarium in Baltimore. Alumni are invited to a private immersion tour and breakfast at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. The event offers a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility.

Monday, March 31, 7 p.m.: Hoboken Zog kickball. Alumni are invited to join fellow Blue Hens for kickball at Mama Johnson Field in Hoboken, N.J.

Saturday, April 5, 9 a.m.: Easter Egg-stravaganza. The fifth annual Easter Egg-stravaganza is a family fun event with activities that include pictures with the Easter Bunny, breakfast, arts and crafts, face painting and balloon animals. 

Sunday, April 6, 1 p.m.: Grape to plate. Blue Hens in the Reading, Pa., area are invited to a wine trail and culinary adventure at the Pinnacle Ridge Winery in Kutztown.

Wednesday, April 9, 4 p.m.: President’s Leadership Series. “This Is Your Brain at 135 Miles Per Hour” will be the topic of a President’s Leadership Series presentation by alumna Ingrid Steffensen, an art history graduate and author, professor and race car driver.

Wednesday, April 9, 5:30 p.m.: Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series. Alumni are invited to a lecture by Christiane Gruber on “Prophetic Products: The Prophet Muhammad in Contemporary Iranian Visual Culture.”

Saturday, April 12, 7 p.m.: Baltimore Urban Pirates cruise. The Baltimore Alumni Club will offer the second annual Urban Pirates cruise around Baltimore. The weekend is also the Fell’s Point Privateer Festival.

Friday, April 25, 1 p.m.: ‘Art and Science: Connections and Intersections.’ Alumni are invited to a symposium on the relationships among arts, science and technology organized by the Department of Art History and the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory.

Wednesday, May 7, 6:30 p.m.: Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series. Alumni are invited to the Wayne Craven Lecture, as S. Hollis Clayson of Northwestern University speaks on “Episodes from the Visual Culture of Electric Paris.”

June 6-8: Alumni Weekend.
