University Library hosts reception to thank library student assistants

3:50 p.m., July 10, 2013--The University of Delaware Library thanked its many library student assistants at the Library Student Assistant Appreciation Reception held May 1.

Since July 1, 2012, more than 130 library student assistants have worked more than 34,600 hours, the equivalent of 18 full-time staff. The University of Delaware Library could not provide the level of services or hours of operation without its student workers, a representative said.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

The reception provided an opportunity for library staff to thank the student assistants who performed essential “front-line” services such as checking-out library and reserve materials; shelving new and returned books, journals, and newspapers; checking-in new journals, newspapers, and other periodicals; processing interlibrary loan requests; assisting library users with multimedia equipment; and many other information-related duties.

The library also recognized 44 graduating library student assistants for their academic achievements.

The highlight of the reception was a display of books selected by and honoring the graduating library student assistants. The books were selected from recent library acquisitions and had special bookplates noting the student’s name and year of graduation.

The selected titles reflected the personal and academic interests of each of the graduating library student assistants as well as current events. Examples of books selected by members of the Class of 2013 include Subsea Engineering Handbook by Yong Bai and Qiang Bai, The Story of Music by Howard Goodall, and Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg.

In addition, the University of Delaware Library Assembly of Professional Staff (UDLAPS) presented Ashley Evans with the 2013 Library Student Assistant Scholarship. This annual scholarship recognizes a student employee who demonstrates outstanding student service, a commitment to librarianship, and leadership potential

Evans graduated in May with a bachelor of arts degree in history and a minor in educational technology from the College of Arts and Sciences. She was selected for the $750 scholarship through a competitive application process and will use the award to complete a graduate library degree at the University of Maryland College of Information Studies.
