Announcements

Sujata K. Bhatia, who earned honors bachelor's degrees in biology, biochemistry and chemical engineering and a master's degree in chemical engineering at UD, all in 1999, will present an invited talk at TEDxUNC on Feb. 15 at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. The title of the talk will be “Innovation by Nature,” a discussion of natural materials as biomedical materials and also on the need for increased diversity in engineering education. The overall theme of the conference is “Taking Flight.” Bhatia, a physician, bioengineer and professionally licensed chemical engineer, is a member of the teaching faculty of biomedical engineering and executive education at Harvard University. She is assistant director for undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering, an associate with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and an administrative fellow in the Office of the Assistant to the President.

Alec A. Davis, a 2013 graduate of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment who took courses in Japanese studies, has accepted a second year commitment to the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program in Tahara City, Japan, as an assistant language teacher. The JET program started in 1987 with the cooperation of governments of participating countries. As of July 2013, there were 4,372 participants in the program from 41 countries. The objectives of the JET program are to help enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The program also aims to improve foreign language education in Japan and to encourage international exchange at the local level by fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth. Davis will be living and working in Japan through August 2015.
