2:26 p.m., Feb. 27, 2014--From the Trabant University Center to Trinidad and Tobago, University of Delaware students traveled the world during the inaugural Study Abroad Fair held Monday, Feb. 24.

Sponsored by the Institute for Global Studies (IGS) and Study Abroad Ambassadors, the fair included information on upcoming study abroad opportunities.

Global Stories

Fulbright awards

Three University of Delaware students and an alumna have received word this spring that they will travel abroad as part of the newest class of Fulbright Student Program award winners.

Peace Corps plans

Two University of Delaware students, John McCarron and Bridgette Spritz, have been selected as Peace Corps volunteers and will serve in Ghana and Rwanda.

Thirty different programs were on display with faculty ready to answer student questions, provide informational materials and show off fun and eclectic trinkets from their program locations.

In addition to faculty, representatives from IGS, Student Financial Services, the English Language Institute, the Center for Global and Area Studies and UD Alternative Breaks were present with guidance and tips.

“Where will you find yourself?” was the theme of the event, encouraging students to study abroad to find their passion, independence and spirit of adventure.

Students who attended the fair were able to register to win a suitcase filled with prizes, including a travel pillow, universal adapter, memory stick and other assorted travel accessories. One lucky freshman, Andrew Gilbert, was selected as the winner.

All attendees of the fair were treated to a presentation of photos and social media posts by participants in Winter Session 2014 study abroad, as well as hot chocolate and fortune cookies.

A complete listing of study abroad programs for the coming year can be found online. Students should attend interest meetings to gather more information, and should be aware of upcoming application and scholarship deadlines, including March 10 and April 15 for fall 2014, and April 20 for winter 2015 programs.

Members of the University community will have an opportunity to learn more about study abroad this spring when the winning entries in IGS’ “Blue Hens Around the World” photo contest will be revealed.  Over 60 photos were submitted by participants in winter 2014 study abroad programs, and include a stuffed, mini Baby Blue mascot in locations around the world.

Beginning Monday, March 3, follow @UDGlobal on Instagram to see the top 10 countdown, and visit 44 Kent Way – the new home for UD’s global and graduate communities – to see them on display.

The first place winner will be revealed on Friday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m. at 44 Kent Way, just prior to the start of the weekly OISS International Coffee Hour. The top three finalists will receive prizes and have their photos taken.

UD’s study abroad program recently celebrated its 90th anniversary of sending students abroad. Widely regarded as the first study abroad program in the U.S., the University of Delaware sends more than 30 percent of its students abroad to earn college credits, acquire smart skills for the job market, gain new insights and perspectives, and develop a healthy dose of self-confidence.
