Feb. 7: NIH award celebration
Event to launch program to support research infrastructure development in state
8:47 a.m., Feb. 3, 2014--The University of Delaware, along with partners Christiana Care Health System, Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, and the Medical University of South Carolina, will celebrate a $25 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to support the growth of clinical and translational research over the next five years.
The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 7, from 8-9:30 a.m. in the atrium of UD’s new Health Sciences Complex at the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus.

Speakers will include Gov. Jack Markell, U.S. Sen. Thomas Carper, UD President Patrick Harker, U.S. Rep. John Carney, Delaware Department of Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf, and leaders of the new program, which is known as ACCEL.
ACCEL brings together the four institutions with complementary missions to create one regional home for clinical and translational science. The program is led by Stuart Binder-Macleod, associate vice provost for clinical research at UD.
The funding is aimed at accelerating medical research discoveries by establishing seed funding for new research initiatives in clinical and translational medicine. It will also fund mentoring, education and faculty development, and infrastructure improvements.
The event is free and open to the public. The Health Sciences Complex is located at 540 S. College Ave., Newark, Del., 19713. Those interested may tour the facility after the formal program.
