The guidelines are a result of the new compensation system that has been in place since July1, 2012. The system was carefully designed for consistent application across the University. Therefore, coupled with the implementation of the new compensation system, the compensation guidelines provide guidance that will help ensure salary equity, fairness, market competitiveness and alignment with the University’s mission, needs and values.
Key components of the document include:
- Compensation strategy.
- How the compensation system relates to the market and how positions are assigned to the structure.
- Starting salary, promotions, demotions and transfers.
- Temporary assignments/interim appointments.
- Guidelines for position-based changes.
- Administering the compensation system and classification and compensation review of staff salary actions, with tables and charts to summarize job and salary actions (offer, promotion, demotion, employee merit, etc.) and dates and deadlines for two classification cycles each year.
- Managing employee pay within the salary structure to include management of compensation for incumbent salaries that exceed maximum for the grade. Effective July 1, 2015, base salaries will not be increased for any employee with a salary that is equal to or greater than the maximum of their salary grade. Increases resulting from the employee merit process will be consistent with the merit-based percentage increase, but will be paid in the regular pay cycle during the course of the year.
The guidelines are designed to provide employees with an understanding of the University’s compensation system.
The Office of Human Resources works in collaboration with senior leadership, colleagues, managers and supervisors across the University to administer a compensation system that is equitable, fair, competitive, and aligned with the University’s mission and strategic plan, a representative of the office said.
