Recognizing that the problem cannot be resolved strictly by enforcement, NPD and UDPD will build on partnerships within the city of Newark and University communities, as well as with law enforcement partners throughout the state. Using a multifaceted approach, the Joint Agency Alcohol Initiative will combine education, outreach and media involvement with enforcement, and it will host programs throughout the year reaching out to students on campus and in the community.
The initiative's first event, scheduled Aug. 20, will be the "Newark Nightlife Partnership” program, which will bring together managers and staff from local restaurants and bars. Attendees will receive training on local and state laws relating to alcohol and learn how to identify fake IDs and ways to deal with intoxicated persons. Bill Elliott, founder of the Hero Campaign, will provide the opening remarks.
Participating will be representatives from Klondike Kate's, Mojo on Main, Timothy’s of Newark, Santa Fe Mexican Grill, Iron Hill Brewery, Homegrown Cafe, Catherine Rooney’s, Caffé Gelato, Grotto Pizza, Kildare's Irish Pub, Deer Park Tavern, Greene Turtle, Applebee’s, Taverna, Blue Crab Grill, Matilda’s and TGI Friday’s.
Other partners in the initiative include Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder, Delaware Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement, Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles, Delaware Office of Highway Safety, Delaware Restaurant Association and the Hero Campaign.
