From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.


Lydia Timmins, assistant professor of communication, has been elected to the board of directors for the News Division of the Broadcast Education Association. She will serve as research chair, then program chair and then head of the News Division for the organization.


Rudi Matthee, John and Dorothy Munroe Professor of History, presented a paper, "The Fall of the Safavids: Comparisons and Lessons," at the Iran Seminar, Columbia University, New York City, on March 12. He also gave a talk, in Persian, titled "The Decline of the Safavids and the Lessons that Can be Learned from It," at the University of California, Los Angles, on March 30, and he gave an hour-long interview, in Persian, on his career as a scholar of Iran as well as his book Persia in Crisis: The Decline of the Safavids and the Fall of Isfahan (2012), to Andisheh-TV, a Persian-Language TV station in the Los Angeles area, on April 2.

Margaret Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities, gave a paper titled “‘It is such fun to be alive’: Spectacles of Decadence and Energy on the Turn-of-the-Century Stage” at the annual Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies conference, which was hosted this year by the University of Houston, in Houston, Texas, on March 29.
