Follow simple rules to stay safe on the roadways
11:33 a.m., Sept. 13, 2012--With the new semester under way, more pedestrians and bicyclists are out and about in Newark and on the campus.
Drivers, cyclists and walkers are reminded that it’s important to observe the rules of the road for the safety of everyone.

For pedestrians
Walkers are reminded to us crosswalks, and, when signals are in place, pedestrians must obey the signal.
When crossing not in a crosswalk, pedestrians must yield right of way to vehicles.
For bicyclists
In Delaware, bicycles are legal vehicles, and bicyclists must obey all traffic laws. At the same time, motorists must treat bicycles like all other vehicles.
Bicyclists should ride with the flow of the traffic, as far to the right of the roadway as practical and in a straight line.
Bicyclists should wear safety gear, including a helmet and bright-colored clothing.
Bikes are required to yield to pedestrians on a sidewalk or across a roadway and in a crosswalk. In downtown Newark, it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalks of Main Street, but other walkways or pathways are legal.
For drivers
Motorists should keep an eye out for cyclists, particularly around the campus.
Use caution when approaching a bicyclist and give the rider extra space.
Remember bicycles are vehicles and should be given the same right of way and courtesy as any other vehicle.
