Fall lecture series to focus on 'Research on Women and Gender'

1:30 p.m., Sept. 24, 2012--A fall lecture series titled “Research on Women and Gender” is being offered at the University of Delaware.

The lectures, which are part of the course Research on Women (WOMS 299-010), are held from 12:20-1:10 p.m. Wednesdays in 103 Gore Hall. The lectures are open to the public.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Lectures are scheduled as follows:

  • Sept. 26 – “Chicas y Cacao: Women's Influence in the Consumption and Popularization of Chocolate,” Arielle L’Esperance, graduate student, Department of History.
  • Oct. 3 – “Mildred Loving: The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Woman,” Arica Coleman, Department of Black American Studies.
  • Oct. 10 -- “Cleverly Drawn: Oscar Wilde, Charles Ricketts, and the Art of the Woman’s World,” Petra Clark, graduate student, Department of English.
  • Oct. 17 – “Catheters, Slurs, and Pickup Lines: Professional Intimacy in Hospital Nursing,” Lisa C. Ruchti, departments of Women’s and Gender Studies and Anthropology and Sociology, West Chester University.
  • Oct. 24 and Oct. 31 -- To be announced. 
  • Nov. 7 – “The Look of the Ladies: Women’s Clothing during the American Civil War,” Linda Duffy, undergraduate student, Department of History.
  • Nov. 14 -- “Mad Men and the Feminine Mystique,” Suzanne Cherrin, Department of Women and Gender Studies.
  • Nov. 21 – No lecture, holiday recess.
  • Nov. 28 – To be announced.
