Poet-comedian Hernandez-Kolski, Judge Milian to speak

9:54 a.m., Sept. 12, 2012--Latino Heritage Month and Beyond 2012: Cultural Collisions will be marked at the University of Delaware with a variety of events, including talks by poet-comedian Joe Hernandez-Kolski and People’s Court Judge Marilyn Milian.

Hernandez-Kolski will open activities with a presentation titled “Cultural Collisions: Identity, Pop Culture and Politics” to be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19, in Multipurpose Rooms A and B of the Trabant University Center.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Drawing from his personal experiences growing up Latino and Polish, Hernandez-Kolski uses spoken word poetry and comedy to explore the changing face of America.

Milian, who appears on the popular television program The People’s Court, will speak at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1, in Mitchell Hall as part of the Latino Heritage Month Extravaganza. Her topic will be “Courting Diversity: Media, Latinos and the Law.”

Milian has more than 19 years of legal experience and is a graduate of the University of Miami who received her law degree from Georgetown Law School.

Both talks are free and open to the public.

The Comida Latina food festival will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 3-4, and members of the Chi Upsilon Sigma sorority will offer a traditional Guallando experience on Saturday evening, Oct. 13, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.

A Multi-Ethnic Career Development Conference will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, in Clayton Hall and the Fiesta Latina will be held Friday evening, Nov. 9, in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Trabant University Center.
