UD Police investigate phone theft, attempted phone theft

4:41 p.m., Oct. 15, 2012--University of Delaware Police are investigating reports of a man who has twice approached individuals on The Green, inquired about the time or a class location and then attempted to take their cellphones. 

The first incident occurred about 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 7. The victim handed his phone to the suspect, who then walked off with it. The victim attempted to retrieve the phone but was unsuccessful. 

In the second incident on Friday, Oct. 12, a staff member walking on The Green in the area of Hullihen Hall was approached by a man who asked the time. The staff member used his smartphone to check, and the man tried to take it from him. The victim was able to retain his phone. The suspect then fled north on The Green toward Delaware Avenue.

In the second incident, the suspect is described as 18 to 22 years old, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing between 160 and 180 pounds and wearing a red jacket. 

Members of the community who experience a similar incident or who see suspicious activity should report it immediately by using an area blue light phone, calling 302-831-2222 or dialing 911.
