Cathy Matson, professor of history, recently presented a paper titled “Crossing Empires: Philadelphia's Trade with New Orleans, Havana, and Cap Francois in the Late 18th Century” at the Columbia University Seminar in Early American Studies, Sept. 11. This paper is extracted from portions of three different chapters in Matson’s next book manuscript and stems from research, partially funded by the Department of History and UD’s international travel grants, at numerous foreign and North American archives.
David Suisman, associate professor of history, made a presentation on the unusual career of the late Tony Schwartz at the Stillspotting NYC Finale in the Peter B. Lewis Theatre and Museum Rotunda at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Oct. 9. A controversial “media guru,” Schwartz was a communications theorist, influential advertising executive and collector of New York street sounds. The event was presented by the Guggenheim and Unsound.
LuAnn DeCunzo, professor of anthropology, will present “The ‘Culture of Agriculture’ in 17th-Century New Sweden” at the 12th annual New Sweden History Conference, Nov. 3, American Swedish Historical Museum, Philadelphia.
Christopher Richards, a doctoral candidate in the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, presented a study on policy and geothermal energy development at the Geothermal Resources Council 2012 annual meeting in Reno, Nev.

Rudi Matthee, John and Dorothy Munroe Professor of History, published "The Portuguese Presence in the Persian Gulf: An Overview," in Jeffrey R. Macris and Saul Kelly, eds., Imperial Crossroads: The Great Powers and the Persian Gulf (Annapolis: Naval Institute Press, 2012), pp. 1-12, 185-86.
Cathy Matson, professor of history, recently published two articles in the widely acclaimed Oxford Bibliographies series in Atlantic History, “The Economy of British America” and “Merchants’ Networks in the Atlantic World.” The essays appear in both book and online editions, the latter at www.oxfordbibliographies.com.
Scott E. Caplan, associate professor of communication, was co-author of the paper “A Cognitive-Behavioral Model of Problematic Online Gaming in Adolescents Aged 12-22 Years,” Computers in Human Behavior, September 2012.
Service
Matthew Robinson, professor of sport management, has been named chair of the Delaware Sports Commission and Samantha Huge, interim director of athletics and recreation services, has been named to the DSC board of directors.
