Newark man arrested after hit and run collision on Cleveland Avenue

8:37 p.m., Oct. 20, 2012--Newark Police have arrested a 46-year-old Newark man after a hit and run collision that injured three pedestrians on East Cleveland Avenue, early Saturday morning, Oct. 20.  

Around 12:15 a.m., a group of pedestrians was walking west on the north side of East Cleveland Avenue. A 21-year-old woman was walking in the roadway just off the curbline when she was struck by a 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck. Two 19-year-old women walking on the sidewalk were struck by flying debris from the initial collision; one in the back of the head and the other in the lower leg.

After the collision, the truck failed to stop and continued west on East Cleveland Avenue. Witnesses obtained the tag number for the vehicle, and officers immediately responded to the home of Errol L. Johnson, where the truck was located in the driveway. Johnson was still inside the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. 

The 21-year-old woman, who is not a UD student, was taken to Christiana Hospital and is listed in serious but stable condition with head and internal injuries. Both women who were hit by debris are UD students. The woman who was struck in the back of the head was taken to Christiana Hospital for minor lacerations to the head. The other woman declined medical treatment. 

Johnson has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of injury collision. He was released from custody after posting $600 secured bail.   

The Newark Police Department Traffic Unit is continuing the investigation into this crash. Anyone with additional information should contact Cpl.
