Columbia University's Kitcher to deliver Norton Memorial Lecture

1:34 p.m., Nov. 7, 2012--Philip Kitcher, John Dewey Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, will deliver the fall David Norton Memorial Lecture at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, in 103 Gore Hall on the University of Delaware campus in Newark.

Kitcher will speak on “Ethics as a Human Project.”

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by UD’s Department of Philosophy. Those who attend are invited to enjoy refreshments following the lecture at 5 p.m.

Kitcher, who received a doctorate from Princeton University in 1974, has taught at Vassar College, the University of Vermont, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, the University of California San Diego and Columbia.

He has published numerous articles and 12 books, most recently Science in a Democratic Society and The Ethical Project.

He has received a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, served as president of the Pacific Division of the American Philosophical Association, is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was Phi Beta Kappa Romanell Professor and has been awarded the Humboldt Prize.

The Norton Lecture is designed to present contemporary work by leading figures in ethics in a manner accessible to the general UD community. The lecture was originally scheduled for Nov. 2 and was postponed until Nov. 29 because of Hurricane Sandy.
