UD to mark International Education Week with films, lectures, entertainment

(Editor's note: The Nov. 13-14 visit by Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa has been canceled. The visit is expected to be rescheduled in the future.)

10:45 a.m., Nov. 7, 2012--The University of Delaware will celebrate International Education Week (IEW) from Nov. 12-16 with a world of activities – films, galleries, lectures, ethnic foods, an international fashion and talent show, global dance featuring DJ Amaze, international Quizzo, prizes and more.

Students can pick up a passport starting at the Monday events and receive stamps on their passport for attending events. For each stamp, they will receive a ticket that can be entered to win prizes at the final Friday event, including the grand prize, an iPad.

Fulbright awards

Three University of Delaware students and an alumna have received word this spring that they will travel abroad as part of the newest class of Fulbright Student Program award winners.

Peace Corps plans

Two University of Delaware students, John McCarron and Bridgette Spritz, have been selected as Peace Corps volunteers and will serve in Ghana and Rwanda.

International Education Week is an annual celebration of international programs that was started by the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Education. IEW is observed across the United States and in more than 100 countries. 

IEW at UD is a collaboration between Office of Residence Life, the English Language Institute, the Confucius Institute and the Institute for Global Studies, with additional contributions from other offices and departments throughout campus.

  • 3:30-4:30 p.m., lecture, “Buddhism and the Modern World,” with speaker Maria Tu, assistant professor of Chinese studies, Elliott Hall Conference Room.
  • 8 p.m., Global Dance, Trabant University Center Multipurpose Rooms A and B.

Tuesday, Nov. 13

  • 9 a.m.-5 p.m., “Gallery of China: Tradition and Transformation,” Confucius Institute.
  • 3:30-4:30 p.m., lecture, “Nobel Laureate Mo Yan and China’s Magic Realism,” Elliott Hall Conference Room.
  • 4-6 p.m., international careers panel, George Read North lounge. Learn about international career opportunities and how to make the most of international experiences. Panelists include representatives of the UD Career Services Center, Peace Corps, American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) and more.
  • 5-6:15 p.m., Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center Transnational Encounters, visiting author Mario Vargas Llosa, Peruvian writer and 2012 Nobel Laureate in Literature, Clayton Hall.

  • 8 p.m., UD Speakers, with Alan Fox speaking on West Campus in the Rodney Corner, Kara Ellerby speaking on East Campus in the Russell D/E lounge and Justin De Leon speaking on the Laird Campus in the Independence East lounge.

Friday, Nov. 16

  • ▪ 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Street Foods of the World. Enjoy a sampling of various popular street foods such as pho, sausages, gyros and pizzas among a variety of other menu items. All residential dining locations.
  • ▪ 5-9 p.m., Festival of Nations and International Talent and Fashion Show, Trabant University Center Multipurpose Rooms

For those who are interested in modeling for the International Fashion Show, no modeling experience is necessary and all students are welcome.

Wear your own clothes from your country or come and find an outfit from another country to wear.

Sign up and “bring/find an outfit” will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 3-5p.m. or on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 4-6p.m., in the lobby of 108 E. Main St.

Those who would like to wear their own clothing should bring it with them on those two dates.
