Horn Program accepting applications for premier educational opportunity

6:43 p.m., Nov. 8, 2012--The new Horn Program in Entrepreneurship has announced the Startup eXperience, the program’s premier educational opportunity open to University of Delaware students at all levels – undergraduate, master’s and doctoral – in all colleges and majors interested in learning more about entrepreneurial ventures.

Comprised of two courses in which student teams will attempt to conceive, validate and launch high growth potential businesses, the Startup eXperience offers students the opportunity to learn from faculty, investors, seasoned entrepreneurs and technical experts about viable business models using customer development and lean startup principles.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

“If you’ve ever thought about starting a business, imagined how cool it would be to work for a rapidly growing technology company or envisioned yourself helping a Fortune 500 company bring new innovations to market, then the Startup eXperience is for you,” said Dan Freeman, associate professor of marketing and director of the Horn Program in Entrepreneurship.

Freeman will be one of three faculty members teaching the program. The others are John Currie, an accomplished senior executive and entrepreneur who creates value from disruptive technologies, and Thomas Bodnar, a seasoned executive and venture capitalist.

The program will teach students to recognize and ideate around opportunity; conduct proof of concept testing; bootstrap resources; bring new technologies to market; and launch and grow new ventures.

Additional topics will include intellectual property, venture capital, business strategy and team building.

Students considering applying to the program should demonstrate an interest in entrepreneurship or technology innovation, exhibit a strong record of academic achievement and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The inaugural program will meet Tuesdays in the spring semester and enrollment will be limited to 35 students.
