1:53 p.m., Nov. 2, 2012--The Blood Bank of Delmarva is teaming up with the University of Delaware for the 11th annual Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Blood Challenge on Wednesday, Nov.14.

UD is going head‐to‐head with 10 other schools in the Colonial Athletic Association to recruit the most blood donors in one day. With a goal of recruiting 1,500 blood donors, UD is hoping to hold onto the championship title, which it won back from Drexel University last year. All locations are open to the general public, and the community is encouraged to participate.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

“The CAA Blood Challenge is a great way to not only support one of our local colleges and hopefully retain a coveted title, but a chance to save so many lives with a one‐day blood drive,” said Blood Bank of Delmarva CEO Roy Roper. “The timing of the event couldn’t be more perfect. Our inventory was impacted by Hurricane Sandy, which forced us to close our centers for two days. The CAA Blood Challenge will give us an opportunity to replenish our supplies and continue to serve the 16 hospitals in Delmarva. This is particularly crucial leading up to Thanksgiving and December holidays.”

In order to achieve growth in blood donations, Blood Bank of Delmarva will again partner with New York Blood Center (NYBC) this year. NYBC will provide the equipment and staff needed to draw additional blood donors. There will be four blood drives held throughout UD's Newark campus, including the Trabant University Center's  Multipurpose Rooms from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (which will be run by Blood Bank of Delmarva), as well as Pencader Dining Hall, the Bob Carpenter Center and the Perkins Student Center from noon to 6 p.m. (which will be run by NYBC).

In addition to being rewarded with knowing they are saving lives, donors have a chance to go home with prizes and giveaways. Every donor who donates at The Bob or Trabant University Center will receive one free ticket to the UD vs. Villanova football game on Saturday, Nov. 17. All registered donors at all of the locations will be eligible to win a $500 gift card to the Christiana Mall and prizes from Caffé Gelato, Fusion Fitness, Lazybones Laundry and more.

Appointments are strongly encouraged, but walk‐ins are welcome and will be taken as time allows. To make an appointment to give blood, visit www.delmarvablood.org or call 1-888-8‐BLOOD‐8.
