Participants in the “Improving Student Learning Through Writing” workshop will learn strategies to incorporate high-impact writing activities into their courses.

Each day’s session will include mini-presentations, discussions and time for faculty to work on a syllabus, lesson plans and writing assignments. By the workshop’s end, participants can expect to be better able to:

  • Improve student engagement and thinking while helping students write better;
  • Use quick, informal writing-to-learn activities that lessen the need for longer assignments;
  • Help students understand and write for a specific discipline;
  • Identify best practices in grammar and mechanics;
  • Harness strategies to efficiently and effectively respond to student writing and provide students with concrete and useful feedback;
  • Employ technology and new media to support student writing;
  • Save time — not waste it — with strategies for grading student writing; and
  • Manage the paper load.

Christine Cucciarre, assistant professor of English, and Michael McCamley, associate director of the University Writing Center, are facilitating the workshop.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and all participants will receive copies of John Bean’s Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom

Space in the workshop is limited. To sign up, visit the workshop website and download the registration form.
