New graduate tuition policy approved
5:22 p.m., May 13, 2013--Effective with the 2013-14 academic year, University of Delaware graduate students will be billed by the credit, as approved by the Board of Trustees this spring.
The new structure will provide improved transparency in graduate student tuition rates at UD, allowing the deans of each of the University’s seven colleges to clearly communicate the cost of an entire graduate program. Colleges will continue to have the flexibility, as they do now, to offer tuition scholarships to select graduate students.

Currently, graduate students are billed for no more than nine credits during fall or spring semesters, and for lower specific numbers of credits in summer and winter, regardless of the number of credits they take. The exception is graduate students in the Lerner College of Business and Economics; graduate students in this college are currently billed by the credit in winter and summer sessions.
The current system encourages students to schedule more classes during a semester, since they only pay for nine credits even when they enroll for 10 or more credits in a semester. These larger course loads can have a negative impact on their academic experience. It also means that the costs of an entire graduate program can vary from student to student, depending on how he or she schedules courses across terms.
Based on statistics from the current year, the tuition policy change is expected to affect fewer than 10 percent of graduate students.
The University is committed to ensuring that this policy change does not create an unexpected financial burden for students. During the upcoming 2013-2014 academic year colleges will be offering scholarships to existing students (admitted by June 2013) to assist with this transition. Students should contact their colleges for additional information.
This change in policy does not affect graduate students with University-supported assistantships or fellowships, as they are currently not billed on a per-credit basis.
