11:55 a.m., May 7, 2013--This August when legacy students of the Class of 2017 sign a banner that reads “Students Today. Blue Hens Forever,” it will symbolize their decision to follow in their parents’ footsteps and become University of Delaware students themselves.

Legacy students are those whose parent, parents or step-parent also graduated from the University. On April 6 and 13, the UD Alumni Association (UDAA) hosted two receptions for prospective legacy students and their parents to congratulate the students on being accepted to UD and to encourage them to carry on the University of Delaware tradition. Almost 130 families attended a reception this year.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

At the receptions, several members of the UD Alumni Association board of directors were on hand to talk to alumni and students, and Student Alumni Ambassadors and Blue Hen Ambassadors were there to answer questions from the current student perspective.

Carle Foster, a 1986 graduate and chair of the association's Outreach Committee, said he was pleased to see so many families attend. "The Legacy Receptions allow us to connect with other alumni and to share our UD memories with future alumni, with the hope they choose to carry on their legacy and become Blue Hens."

The receptions are also an opportunity for the admitted students and their parents to learn more about how the UDAA engages with students through programs like the sophomore swap and Blue Hen Games and the junior class halfway there party and how they offer financial support to current legacy students through their Alumni Enrichment Award program.

Each student who attended a reception was given a University of Delaware frame, and they will receive a copy of the photo taken that day of them with their family.
