4:10 p.m., May 13, 2013--Newark Police have obtained an arrest warrant for Michael J. Creed, 25, of Newark, in connection with the stabbing of a University of Delaware student that occurred early Sunday, May 12.

He is being charged with first degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

At approximately 1:20 a.m., May 12, Newark Police responded to a report of a stabbing at a city parking lot at 54 East Delaware Ave. According to police, an argument between two men led to a fight during which one of them sustained three stab wounds to the chest and abdomen. The victim, a 22-year-old UD student, was taken to Christiana Hospital where he underwent surgery and is currently listed in stable condition.

With the use of surveillance cameras in the area, detectives were able to obtain information on a vehicle associated with the suspect before the fight. Through additional investigation, they learned that the suspect began to yell toward a group of people in the parking lot. One of the people in the group was the victim, who approached the suspect. The suspect was observed leaning into a car and then coming out again.

According to police, the victim grabbed the suspect by the shoulder, and the suspect was seen making punching motions toward the victim. The suspect then ran away, and the victim noticed that he had been stabbed.

Creed is currently in custody at Newark Police headquarters.
