Police increase presence, issue safety tips to encourage responsible choices

4:12 p.m., March 12, 2013--The University of Delaware Police Department is encouraging members of the UD community to make safe decisions this weekend. Extra officers will be on patrol on campus and in the neighboring area to promote safety and to respond quickly to any issues.

UDPD emphasizes safety and responsible decision making by reminding students that after just one drink, alcohol impairs judgment, vision, hearing, coordination and reaction time. Binge drinking carries the risk for alcohol poisoning or even death.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Students should always call 911 for help if a friend shows signs of alcohol poisoning or they themselves need assistance. For more information on Medical Amnesty Protocol, click here. 

The Newark Police Department will also have additional units on patrol throughout St. Patrick’s Day weekend to enforce order maintenance issues, including alcohol violations, noise and disorderly conduct complaints.

“Our goal is to ensure a safe and peaceful weekend for the city of Newark,” said Newark police spokesman Lt. Mark Farrall. “It is our hope that students will use good judgment to increase their safety and to prevent having an unpleasant encounter with the police.”

The Newark Police Department also encourages party hosts to proactively call for police assistance if unwanted guests arrive or the party grows too large to manage.  

A party host requesting police assistance in such incidents will not be subject to the same enforcement action taken when a complaint is received from an independent caller. 

Tweet-Along

On Saturday, March 16, the University of Delaware Police Department invites their Twitter followers to join them for a live “tweet-along” from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. UD Police will constantly update the unit’s Twitter account with live tweets, pictures and videos as officers patrol campus.

Grant funding

The Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant supports community efforts to prevent substance abuse. Funding for this project has been provided by the Delaware Department for Health and Social Services, Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, through a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The SPF is a five-step process assisting states in developing prevention plans and providing funding to communities to execute the plans.
