For the contest, academy members were asked to share their most meaningful experiences in providing health and nutrition services as RDs. Hill’s answer “helping save the life of a young pediatric patient who had leukemia with medical nutrition therapy and using food as medicine” was selected as the best among the 150 inspirational stories and testimonials received.
“This was incredibly meaningful to me because I could relate to my patient,” she wrote. “As an adolescent, I had conquered the same type of cancer, becoming a now 12-year survivor. My relatability and nutritional expertise not only gave my patient a sense of hope and support, but my nutritional tools and coaching also helped the patient overcome long-term nutritional complications after intensive treatments. It gave me a rush of adrenaline and put a huge smile on my face to know I helped save a life.”
Hill is a native of Yountville, in Napa County, Calif. She earned her bachelor’s degree in food and nutritional science from San Diego State University and completed her dietetic internship through UD’s distance program in 2010. Hill is a dietitian at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, where she works primarily with children.
