UD's Hugh R. Sharp Campus to be highlighted in Aug. 7 teacher workshop
8:56 a.m., March 19, 2013--Teachers are invited to attend a workshop about field trip destinations in Lewes, including the University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus, that provide engaging settings for lessons on science, history and natural resources.
The daylong workshop, “A Day in Lewes: Exploring Collaborative Field Trip Opportunities,” is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Teachers will meet at the Lewes Historical Society for a tour and then visit six other locations: Lightship Overfalls, Zwaanendael Museum, University of Delaware, Delaware Bay and River Cooperative’s DELRIVER, Fort Miles and the Seaside Nature Center at Cape Henlopen State Park.
The aim is to show kindergarten through college-level teachers from around the state the many options for multidisciplinary learning in the historical seaside city of Lewes. Educators will take guided tours and cover topics ranging from simple machines and wind energy to navigation and colonial architecture.
“They can do a field trip where they cover math, history, science and social studies all in one shot, which is very appealing,” said Chris Petrone, education specialist with Delaware Sea Grant.
The workshop is organized by the Lewes Education Coalition, which formed in 2011 to encourage teachers to utilize Lewes as a field trip destination. Coalition members share concerns about dropping numbers of school group visits in recent years, with many schools having trouble funding transportation costs and justifying time spent outside the classroom.
“In an effort to bring school visitation back up, all these groups got together and started talking,” Petrone said.
Workshop attendees will receive educational resources from participating organizations. All material is aligned to applicable Delaware education standards where possible. After the tours, teachers will participate in a roundtable discussion and talk about planning an effective, multidisciplinary field trip to Lewes.
The workshop convenes at the Lewes Historical Society Complex at 110 Shipcarpenter Street in Lewes, and transportation between sites is provided. The program counts toward at least five “clock hour” credits for teachers and the fee is $10. The workshop will be listed in the Delaware Teacher Center summer course catalogue.
