Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

• March 1: Ryan German, a 2000 UD graduate and owner of Caffé Gelato, will present on “Making a Job After College” at 12:15 p.m. at Caffé Gelato at 90 E. Main Street. A sit-down lunch is included and participants are asked to register online.

During a trip to Spain, German came up with the idea to open a restaurant in the U.S. that serves homemade Italian gelato. The following year he spent six weeks in Porto Santo Stefano and Florence, Italy, learning to make authentic Italian gelato. He purchased the equipment needed to manufacture gelato back in Delaware and just prior to his senior year at UD German started developing the concept for Caffé Gelato, which opened after he graduated 2000.

• March 8: Demetrius Pinder, owner of Nuts and Bolts Web Design, will present “Online Strategies for You and Your Company” at 12:15 p.m. at the Venture Development Center at 196 S. College Avenue. Free pizza and soda will be provided.

Nuts and Bolts has been helping to build small businesses and non-profits on the web since 2004. Pinder also works for UD’s College of Arts and Sciences. He received a bachelor’s degree in web management and e-commerce from Johnson and Wales University in 2004 and his MBA from Goldey-Beacom College in 2008.  He currently is pursuing additional credentials in project management.

• March 15: Nyla Dookeran of Global Franchise Advisors will present “Franchising: A Lesser-known Entry Point into Entrepreneurship” at 12:15 p.m. at the VDC. Free pizza and soda will be provided.

Dookeran holds a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Toronto and a certificate in business from the Wharton School of Business. She has worked in a corporate setting for 18 years and has held a variety of roles in science and technology, operations, supply chain management and marketing. Dookeran is currently digital marketing program manager at DuPont and was recently certified as a franchise consultant and embarked into entrepreneurship by starting her own company, Global Franchise Advisors.
