New Voice over Internet Protocol phones to arrive on West Campus

8:20 a.m., June 13, 2013--University of Delaware Telephone Services advises the University community that the deployment of new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephones is proceeding and will continue campuswide through July.

The University is making the switch from a traditional Centrex telephone system to a VoIP/data network phone service, to offer a more sustainable and modern phone service while keeping line costs low. The existing Centrex “land line” infrastructure is beginning to wear and is costly to repair.

2FA protects you

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

The UD vendor in charge of deployment, Dimension Data, reports North Campus is complete and West Campus will begin receiving new VoIP phones today. West Campus is defined as buildings with codes beginning with NW (Newark West).   Go to the UD map to find the building codes

After West Campus, deployment will proceed to South (NS), East (NE) and Central (NC) campuses.

Faculty and staff are reminded that until the entire campus is “cut over” to the new VoIP phone service in mid-August, they will need to keep two phones on their desks. Existing Centrex phone service continues in its entirety, handling incoming calls, outgoing calls, and voicemail. Until the cut over, the new VoIP phones will function for outgoing calls and voicemail for calls received from other VoIP phones.

Once employees receive their new phones, they are encouraged to visit the VoIP website for complete dialing and voicemail setup instructions, and more.

The new VoIP phones, manufactured by Cisco, have been selected to mirror the features on employees’ current Centrex phones.

During this major project, new Centrex phone line installations will be processed on a case-by-case basis. Centrex phone lines that need to be moved within the same building will still be made, but building-to-building phone line moves are unavailable.

See the VoIP website for more details, including a list of buildings in the West Campus deployment.
